The metropolitan area of Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas is one of the most populated areas in the country. Also, since Texas shares one of the largest and busiest borders in the entire United States of America, the Dallas station plays a very important role in regulating immigration and curbing drug trafficking throughout all of the country. Dallas is one of the main corridors through which illegal immigrant and drugs get transported throughout the rest of the country, so it is in some ways ground zero for both the war o drugs and the epicenter of illegal immigration.
The Dallas station was established in 1988 as a way to help relieve some of the border congestion at the Laredo border crossing station, which is one of the busiest in the entire country. The Dallas station is the northernmost in the Laredo sector of the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency and it comprises more than 77,500 square miles of territory that must be monitored, as well as a population of millions in more than 85 counties.
Curbing Illegal Immigration and Terrorism
The primary goal of the border patrol jobs at the Dallas station are to assist the Laredo border station and local law enforcement in capturing illegal immigrants and recognizing potential threats to national security. Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, border stations have received increased funding and more agents in order to better protect our borders. Agents at the Dallas station are primarily responsible for assisting with operational duties, rather than searching cargo, interviewing people crossing the borders and other duties that are common for agents that work directly on the border. But, because Dallas is located so far away from the United States and Mexican border, agents in Dallas are not required to perform those duties.
Border Agent Duties in Dallas
Agents in Dallas are responsible for researching illegal immigrant traffic trends for the Department of Homeland Security. The agents also regularly perform immigration checks at airports and other travel locations within their jurisdiction. Border patrol jobs in Dallas also require agents to check freight trains and passenger buses. The station does not employ a large number of agents, so they rely quite heavily on assistance from local law enforcement agencies when it comes to identifying suspicious activities in the area.
