Border Patrol jobs in the Detroit, Michigan Border Patrol Sector have increased significantly since the U.S. terror attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent formation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which now oversees U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In fact, the total number of Border Patrol professionals at the Detroit Sector was just 38 in FY2001. By FY2002, this number jumped to 64 and then to 80 in FY2004. By FY2011, the Detroit Sector supported 409 Border Patrol jobs.

Border Patrol professionals in the Detroit, Michigan Sector were responsible for 1,531 apprehensions and the seizure of more than 130 pounds of marijuana and nearly 10 pounds of cocaine in FY2011 alone.

The CBP in the Detroit Sector is responsible for securing the nation’s borders between Ports of Entry and protecting against all threats, including transnational criminal organizations, illegal immigration, terrorists, and terrorist weapons.

This Sector, which spans an area of 863 miles of international water boundary and more than 3,800 miles of lakeshores and riverbanks, is responsible for Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. Michigan alone has 83 counties that cover more than 57,000 square miles and is surrounded by Lakes Superior, Huron, Michigan, and Erie. The Detroit Sector is also responsible for Lake Saint Clair and the Detroit River, Saint Mary River, and St. Clair River.

Border Patrol Success in the Detroit, Michigan Sector

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agricultural specialists and CBP officers play a significant role in the Detroit Sector of the CBP, as is evident by recent apprehensions and seizures that have occurred there:

  • March 8, 2012: Detroit CBP officers seize a shipment of Chinese made toys with high lead paint levels.
  • April 24, 2012: Detroit CBP Agricultural Specialists intercept an invasive pest from a sea container from the Ivory Coast that could have threatened the U.S. farming industry.
  • August 10, 2012: CBP Officers discover and apprehend an assault-style weapon.
  • September 27, 2012: Detroit CBP officers arrest sexual predators at Detroit Metro Airport attempting to exit the United States.
  • January 11, 2013: Detroit CBP officers seize 1.8 kilograms of heroin found at the Detroit Metro Airport in luggage from a citizen of Ghana.

To achieve a career with the CBP, all CBP officer and agricultural specialist candidates must meet a core set of requirements (as well as specific training, education and experience requirements):

  • U.S. citizenship
  • U.S. residency
  • Current and valid U.S. driver’s license
  • No domestic violence convictions
